Description
Alain Paiement was born in Montreal in 1960, where he currently lives and works, having spending over a decade in Europe. He is a professor at the School of Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal.
His practice has evolved between painting, installation, photography and video, with a continuous interest in geography and mapping processes. Two main groups of works have characterized its production to date: photographic sculptures of architectural spaces, based on the transformation of the optical sphere (1986-2000); photo-mappings, improbable aerial views of domestic and public spaces between plane (1996-2004) and three-dimensional projection (2005-2013).
His research has also given shape to architectural interventions; photographs of persons, things and countless situations; digital montages based on sampling methods; static shots in video and, more recently, painterly abstractions inspired by genetics, based on tessellations and ornamental motifs. Most of his projects focus on the relationship between ordered structures and chaotic phenomena at various scales, from the satellite point of view and that of the macro-photographer.
The actual works try to redefine the temporal phenomena through images. In video and photography, subjects are fluid, transitory, transitional or singularly marked in time. Images interpret the observed reality through cutouts, scans, overlays, non synchronous juxtapositions, projections, re-mappings, false stereoscopics and infinite loops.
